Role Purpose
The Retail Insights Specialist is responsible for embedding Shoprite’s analytical and reporting capabilities across internal departments, ensuring optimal utilization to drive business value. Supporting the Price & Promotion and Customer Ranging teams, the specialist will build stakeholder relationships, interpret data, and deliver actionable insights for customer-centric decision-making.
With deep retail expertise, the specialist identifies opportunities, provides recommendations, and presents findings to guide strategic actions. A strong foundation in category management, retail analytics, pricing strategy, and promotions is essential. Success depends on translating insights into practical solutions while thriving in a fast-paced environment.
Role Description
- Partner closely with Customer Ranging and Price & Promotions teams, alongside cross-functional stakeholders (Buying, Category Management, Marketing, Operations, and Leadership), to enhance pricing, promotions, and assortment strategies.
- Drive the execution of an internal work plan outlining annual commitments to core business objectives.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, offering training and support on Shoprite’s analytical tools to empower stakeholders with data-driven insights.
- Leverage analytics to optimize assortments, identify product gaps, and recommend new product introductions, promotional mechanics, and pricing strategies.
- Collaborate with the REX Services team on category reviews, evaluating performance and identifying growth opportunities.
- Develop Customer Decision Trees (CDTs) to guide assortment adjustments, store layouts, and category resets.
- Monitor and report on KPIs related to pricing, promotions, and ranging, tracking adoption and business impact.
- Address ad-hoc analytical requests, providing insights and recommendations aligned with stakeholder needs.
- Support supplier-facing projects when required, contributing retail expertise to strategic initiatives.
- Conduct local and international market analysis, benchmarking trends and competitor strategies to inform Shoprite’s decision-making.
- Produce insights publications for internal and external stakeholders, highlighting market trends and best practices.
- Build a global network of retail peers to facilitate knowledge sharing and innovation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business, Marketing, Economics, or a related field.
- 5+ years in Category Management, Merchandising, Pricing Strategy, or Retail Analytics, preferably in retail/FMCG.
- Proven success in driving business impact through assortment and pricing insights.
- Strong retail industry knowledge, including market trends, consumer behavior, and economic principles.
- Advanced analytical skills, with experience handling large datasets (Tableau, Power BI, Nielsen advantageous).
- Creative storytelling to translate data into compelling narratives.
- Supplier negotiation experience for pricing and promotional agreements.
- Understanding of retail merchandising, supply chain dynamics, and promotional planning.
