Job Description

The Junior First Officer is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of FlySafair flights. This role works closely with the Captain to ensure operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and a high standard of customer service across all phases of flight.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure flights are conducted safely, efficiently, and on schedule

• Monitor aircraft systems, flight path, and navigation throughout the flight

• Perform all required checks and procedures before, during, and after flights

• Operate and navigate the aircraft in accordance with approved procedures

• Maintain clear communication with crew members, internal departments, external service providers, and passengers

• Ensure full compliance with company policies, operational manuals, and aviation regulations

• Uphold FlySafair’s customer service standards and professional image

• Complete accurate and comprehensive administrative and flight documentation

• Identify safety threats and collaborate with the Captain and Operations to mitigate risks

• Assume command of the aircraft in the event of Captain incapacitation

Operational Duties

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of SACAA regulations, international aviation laws, and company Operations Manuals

• Assist the Captain with operational and administrative duties related to the flight

• Support the Captain in maintaining high standards of crew discipline, conduct, and appearance

• Execute duties in line with FlySafair Standard Operating Procedures, aircraft limitations, and performance requirements

• Independently monitor aircraft position, navigation accuracy, and terrain clearance

• Provide proactive advice and assistance to the Captain to enhance flight safety and efficiency

• Maintain a high standard of personal discipline, conduct, and professional appearance

• Promote professional expertise, teamwork, and crew morale

• Ensure full compliance with the Operations Manual at all times

Flight Preparation and Monitoring

• Maintain full awareness of planned routes, briefing materials, weather forecasts, runway conditions, and alternate aerodromes

• Perform all checks and complete documentation as required by the Operations Manual

• Collaborate with the Captain to review flight documentation, fuel planning, alternates, and operational restrictions

• Execute and monitor normal, abnormal, and emergency checklists in accordance with the Operations Manual, FCOM, and FCTM

• Continuously monitor flight parameters, cross-checking altitude, speed, heading, and system indications

• Immediately advise the Captain of deviations, hazards, or abnormal indications

• Conduct radio communications as required

• Complete all post-flight procedures and submit required reports and documentation, including IQSMS

Job Requirements

• Grade 12 or equivalent

• SACAA Commercial Pilot Licence

• Class 1 SACAA Medical

• SACAA ATPL preferred

• Boeing type rating advantageous

• Minimum 1000 total flying hours with one of the following:

  • 500 Twin Turbine (P1/2) hours under 10 000 kg, or

  • Boeing or Airbus type rating including Level D simulator time, or

  • 250 Jet or Turbine hours over 10 000 kg

• Willingness to sign applicable training bonds

• No criminal record

• Valid RSA driver’s licence and own transport

• South African citizen with proof of identity

• Valid South African passport

• Willingness to work irregular hours on a roster

• Strong knowledge of SACAA, ICAO, and national aviation regulations

• Knowledge of ICAO Doc 8168

• Understanding of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licensing requirements

• ICAO Language Proficiency Level 6
