Job Description
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
As an Inspector at SGS, you will perform inspections as directed by senior inspectors or management within the Natural Resources, Agricultural, and Trade team. Your role ensures efficient and accurate field inspections while maintaining precise records and compliance with industry standards.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct daily operational inspections under senior supervision.
- Inspect fish meal, fish oil, and frozen fish loadings in the Cape Town region and across South Africa.
- Witness and document fumigations, weighings, and equipment verifications.
- Perform vegetable and palm oil vessel discharge supervision in compliance with FOSFA standards.
- Execute shore tank sampling, gauging, and temperature-based tonnage calculations.
- Inspect grains, oilseeds, and agricultural products per GAFTA/FOSFA requirements.
- Conduct cleanliness and suitability checks for containers, tanks, and ship holds.
- Supervise frozen meat inspections, sampling, and loading/discharge processes.
- Complete warehouse and cold store inspections for quality, quantity, and risk assessments.
- Witness container stuffing/de-stuffing and weighings at various sites.
- Perform timber and agricultural product inspections to local and international standards.
- Submit accurate field reports and communicate job details promptly via email or WhatsApp.
- Transport samples and equipment using your own vehicle as needed.
- Maintain job files, log samples, seals, and consumables.
- Support lab submissions, sample storage, and equipment upkeep.
- Adhere to SGS operational integrity, safety policies, and ethical guidelines.
- Assist in quality improvement initiatives and training programs.
- Work shifts, weekends, and public holidays as required.
COMPLIANCE & AUTHORITY
- Report equipment faults or safety hazards to management.
- Stop work if safety, quality, or environmental risks arise.
- Initiate process improvements when deviations occur.
- Uphold SGS’s Code of Integrity and Professional Conduct.
Qualifications
- Grade 12/Matric with mathematics and science subjects.
- Valid driver’s license (minimum Code 08).
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
- Experience in agricultural, fishing, or inspection sectors.
- Willingness to travel and use of own vehicle.
