Role Overview:
As a Legal Advisor at Santam, you will provide expert legal counsel to various business units within SC, addressing complex legal matters and ensuring compliance with stringent governmental and regulatory standards. Your role will involve reviewing legal documentation, offering actionable advice, and managing legal issues requiring external assistance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal Advice: Provide timely, clear, and practical legal advice to business units on diverse legal matters.
- Dispute Management: Analyze disputes, negotiate, and implement effective solutions.
- External Counsel Coordination: Facilitate the involvement of external lawyers when needed.
- Legal Documentation: Negotiate, draft, and review legal agreements, including binders, outsourcing agreements, SLAs, re-insurance agreements, data sharing agreements, NDAs, joint ventures, and cross-border transactions.
- Regulatory Impact Analysis: Research and prepare opinions on regulatory changes and conduct impact analysis.
- Litigation Support: Assist with litigation matters as required.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Education: LLB or higher law degree.
- Admittance: Admitted as an Attorney in South Africa (preferred).
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in the Financial Services industry or legal practice.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Legislation Knowledge: Familiarity with Pension Funds, Insurance, and Financial Sector Legislation, including the Insurance Act, Financial Sector Regulation Act, FAIS, Interpretation of Statutes Act, Conduct of Financial Institutions legislation, FICA, NCA, POPIA, and Consumer Protection Act.
- Advantageous Knowledge: Exposure to Investment and Medical Sector Legislation and retail insurance products.
- Legal Skills: Proficiency in litigation, contract drafting, and legal research.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex data and adapt to new concepts and environments.
