RPO Recruitment is seeking a skilled Refrigeration Engineer with extensive experience in ammonia refrigeration plant engineering to join a leading commercial company in Kariega, Eastern Cape. Responsibilities:
- Maintain refrigeration equipment and peripherals to ensure >97% plant availability.
- Manage critical hardware inventory to prevent downtime.
- Develop and install hardware upgrades to enhance reliability and functionality.
- Plan and execute scheduled maintenance on all equipment.
- Update maintenance schedules and report weekly on progress.
- Optimize plant operations for maximum efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with manufacturer service schedules to maintain warranties.
- Manage critical spares inventory with strategic planning for cost, availability, and downtime.
- Enforce statutory compliance, stopping any unsafe practices immediately.
- Ensure all mechanical work complies with Food Safety and OHS Act.
- Implement safety protocols, including Lock Out Tag Out (LOTTO) and permit systems.
- Draft project scopes, task clarifications, and source supplier quotations.
- Liaise with suppliers to manage order allocations.
- Train and mentor subordinates to develop team capabilities.
- Conduct daily meetings for open team communication.
- Oversee HR activities to ensure team resourcing.
- Lead the team with effective guidance, supervision, and discipline.
- Develop and manage the refrigeration department budget.
- Control expenditures and reduce utility costs (water, electricity, waste).
Requirements:
- Refrigeration/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering Degree.
- 10+ years of hands-on ammonia refrigeration plant experience.
- 5+ years managing large-scale refrigeration plants in FMCG.
- Category C Ammonia Safe Handling certification (essential).
- Strong leadership, analytical, and project management skills.
- Proficient in computer systems and technical software.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
