Position: Technical Superintendent
Reporting To: Marine Engineering Manager
Location: Saldanha Bay
Purpose of the Role
The Technical Superintendent is responsible for the overall management and technical operations of assigned vessels, including maintenance, repair budgeting, survey schedules, vessel inspections, and docking.
Key Performance Areas
Drydocking / Refit and Upgrade Works
- Oversee vessel dry docking, repairs, and surveys, including determining repair specifications.
- Compile detailed reports on completed work, operational budgets, and expenditures.
- Source technical and operational supplies at the most economical rates.
- Evaluate dry-docking and repair quotes and select shipyards for maintenance.
Standards and Safety
- Collaborate with the Safety Management team to implement Safety Management Systems.
- Ensure compliance with Quality & Safety Management standards, codes, and guidelines.
- Implement and monitor the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) onboard vessels.
- Maintain statutory, class, and equipment certifications.
- Oversee incident and accident reporting and investigations.
Budget and Financial Control
- Manage vessel maintenance, spares, and docking budgets with cost control measures.
Technical Compliance and Assistance
- Liaise with Fleet Operations on technical and operational matters.
- Conduct technical audits and defect investigations.
- Review vessel logs and perform monthly inspections.
- Monitor compliance with class certificates and survey requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and supervise contractor repairs.
Personnel Management
- Ensure optimal performance of onboard engineering teams.
- Coordinate technical crew planning with the crewing department.
- Support succession planning for key roles.
- Oversee disciplinary procedures and crew performance evaluations.
Qualifications & Knowledge
- Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency.
- Additional technical qualifications preferred.
- Minimum 5-10 years of relevant engineering experience.
- Proficiency in Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS).
- Knowledge of safety management, vessel surveys, and maritime regulations (IACS, Class Rules).
- Strong understanding of vessel operations, ship systems, and drydocking.
- Familiarity with emergency response and risk management protocols.
