Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic and Relationships

  • Develop and execute a strategic vision for innovation, commercialisation, and incubation.
  • Lead the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) for IP management, licensing, and funding models.
  • Drive research commercialisation through spinouts, licensing, and contract research.
  • Foster entrepreneurship and integrate research-based ventures into the economic ecosystem.

Oversight of the Business Incubator

  • Lead the university’s incubator, developing spin-outs and acceleration programs.
  • Engage investors and industry to enhance research commercialisation.
  • Ensure financial sustainability through partnerships and policy development.

Financial Strategy and Third-Stream Income

  • Develop funding models for innovation and commercialisation sustainability.
  • Manage budgeting, forecasting, and governance for high-impact projects.

Contract Negotiations and Compliance

  • Lead contract negotiations, ensuring regulatory compliance and risk mitigation.
  • Align IP governance with the IPR Act and manage risk assessment processes.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Drive interdisciplinary collaborations and industry partnerships.
  • Represent the university at innovation forums and conferences.

Inherent Job Requirements

  • NQF Level 8 qualification (Bachelor’s/Honours/Postgraduate Diploma).
  • Chartered Accountant (SA) designation.
  • 5+ years of senior financial and innovation management experience.
  • Expertise in research funding, contract negotiation, and IP commercialisation.
  • Proven leadership in strategic planning, risk management, and governance.

Recommendations

  • 8+ years of executive-level financial or innovation leadership.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Knowledge of IP lifecycle, incubation models, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience in policy development, stakeholder engagement, and Remote work tools.
