We are seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to join our fleet operating out of Saldanha Bay on the West Coast.
Position: Chief Engineer (>2000KW Fishing)
Reporting To: FAS Superintendent
Purpose: Ensure vessels operate safely and effectively, fully compliant with SAMSA, maritime regulations, and company policies.
Key Performance Areas
Repairs and Maintenance
- Ensure vessels remain mechanically operational throughout the full voyage.
- Implement preventative maintenance procedures for all equipment and ensure repairs are completed efficiently.
- Notify the Skipper and Superintendent of any performance changes requiring immediate action or shore-based investigation.
- Maintain adequate spare parts to ensure operational efficiency at sea.
Operations, Watchkeeping, and Bunkering
- Oversee machinery performance during sailing and trawling operations.
- Maintain hold temperatures at specified levels.
- Ensure adherence to recognized watchkeeping practices.
- Verify correct grades of fuel and lubrication oils are loaded.
Administration
- Ensure engineering stores meet the requirements of each voyage based on vessel operating parameters.
- Maintain complete and accurate voyage documentation per SAMSA and company requirements.
- Inform engine room staff of operating procedures and equipment maintenance protocols.
- Keep the planned maintenance system up to date.
Standards and Safety
- Take full responsibility for the safety of engine room personnel and machinery.
- Ensure all staff are trained in emergency procedures, with compliance to safety and housekeeping practices.
- Ensure machinery operation complies with international, South African, and company regulations protecting the marine environment.
- Represent the Engineering Department during safety surveys, inspections, and investigations by Sea Harvest, SAMSA, NOSA, Portnet, and other relevant bodies.
Management and Training
- Develop the skills and confidence of officers through onboard training.
- Enforce discipline at sea per company policy and the Merchant Shipping Act.
- Address grievances following the company grievance procedure.
- Continuously assess subordinates and engineering cadets.
Qualifications, Experience & Competencies
- Valid Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (>2000KW Fishing)
- Unrestricted SAMSA Medical Certificate
- Valid STCW documentation
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as Second Engineer (unlimited)
- Prior Chief Engineer experience (unlimited) advantageous
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills
- Personnel management and safety awareness
- Technical report writing proficiency
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken
- Ability to follow company instructions and procedures
