Job Description

The First Officer supports the Captain in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of company aircraft while upholding FlySafair’s operational standards, safety culture, and customer service excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Flight Operations

  • Ensure the safety of flight operations at all times.

  • Monitor the aircraft’s flight path, systems, and performance throughout all phases of flight.

  • Perform required checks and procedures before, during, and after each flight in accordance with company manuals.

  • Navigate and operate the aircraft in line with approved procedures and regulations.

  • Communicate effectively with crew members, internal departments, external service providers, and passengers as required.

  • Ensure full compliance with company policies, standard operating procedures, and aviation regulations.

  • Submit accurate and complete legal and administrative documentation.

  • Assume command in the event of Captain incapacitation.

  • Remain current with SACAA and applicable international aviation regulations and company Operations Manuals.

  • Assist the Captain with operational and administrative duties related to the flight.

  • Support the Captain in maintaining high standards of crew discipline, conduct, appearance, and morale.

  • Confirm safe navigation by independently monitoring aircraft position and terrain clearance.

  • Proactively provide advice and assistance that contribute to safe and efficient flight operations.

  • Carry out additional duties as allocated by the Captain in line with operational requirements.

Pre-Flight Duties

  • Maintain full awareness of the planned route, briefing materials, weather forecasts, and runway conditions at destination and alternate aerodromes.

  • Complete all pre-flight checks and documentation in accordance with the Operations Manual.

  • Collaborate with the Captain to review flight documentation, fuel planning, alternates, and operational restrictions.

In-Flight Duties

  • Perform or monitor normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures in line with approved checklists.

  • Continuously monitor flight instruments, altitude, speed, heading, and system indications.

  • Immediately advise the Captain of deviations, hazards, abnormal readings, or unsafe conditions.

  • Conduct radio communications as required.

Post-Flight Duties

  • Ensure completion of all post-flight procedures in accordance with the Operations Manual and FCOM.

  • Submit all required reports and documentation, including safety and operational reports.

Job Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.

  • Valid SACAA Commercial Pilot Licence (Essential).

  • SACAA Airline Transport Pilot Licence (Preferred).

  • Valid Class 1 SACAA Medical Certificate (Essential).

  • Boeing type rating (Advantageous).

  • Experience on commercial jet aircraft over 20 tons (Advantageous).

  • Minimum of 1,500 total flight hours, including at least 500 hours multi-turbine time (Essential).

  • Multi-crew operational experience (Essential).

  • No existing medical conditions affecting flight duties.

  • Willingness to sign applicable training bonds.

  • No criminal record and willingness to undergo drug and alcohol testing.

  • Own transport and a valid RSA driver’s licence.

  • South African citizen with valid proof of identity.

  • Valid RSA passport.

  • Willingness to work irregular hours on a roster.

  • In-depth knowledge of SACAA, ICAO, and national aviation regulations.

  • Knowledge of ICAO Doc 8186 (Essential).

  • Strong understanding of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licensing requirements.
