Purpose of the Job
The Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and controlling the end-to-end picking process and inventory management within the warehouse. This role manages a team of permanent and outsourced pickers, ensuring that processes are followed consistently, productivity targets are achieved, and customer orders are picked accurately and on schedule. The position supports efficient warehouse operations while maintaining safety, compliance, and high service standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
- Supervise, guide, and support both permanent and outsourced picking staff
- Maintain a disciplined, controlled, and efficient working environment
- Conduct daily check-ins with team members to monitor progress, productivity, and operational challenges
- Ensure all picking activities follow established processes and warehouse procedures
- Confirm that pickers follow system-driven picking and select stock from the correct storage locations
- Perform random accuracy checks to verify items and quantities
- Monitor and ensure that productivity targets for picking are achieved
- Coordinate with warehouse planners to align picking activities with dispatch schedules
- Ensure orders are picked on time to prevent delays, transport costs, or customer service issues
- Monitor warehouse equipment such as pallet jacks and handheld scanners to ensure proper operation
- Ensure all administrative processes within the picking area are completed accurately
- Report daily on productivity levels, progress, delays, and operational challenges
- Maintain records of staff performance and document any process deviations
Warehouse Supervision
- Lead, train, and motivate warehouse picking teams
- Enforce company policies, health and safety regulations, and disciplinary procedures
- Conduct regular team meetings and toolbox talks to promote continuous improvement
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare daily and weekly reports on productivity, accuracy, and inventory status
- Track key performance indicators including order accuracy, picking timelines, and stock discrepancies
- Maintain proper documentation to support internal and external audits
Health and Safety Compliance
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards
- Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions where necessary
- Promote and maintain a safe and hazard-free work environment
Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe warehouse environment at all times
- Ensure aisles, picking areas, and storage zones remain free from obstructions and hazards
- Implement and monitor daily housekeeping schedules for warehouse staff
- Ensure proper disposal of waste and packaging materials in line with hygiene standards
- Conduct regular inspections to identify and resolve potential safety or cleanliness issues
- Ensure tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment are stored correctly and maintained in good condition
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field preferred
- Experience in warehouse picking operations
- Previous supervisory or team leader experience
Skills Requirements
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Knowledge of warehouse management systems, MS Office, and inventory control practices
- Good literacy and numerical skills
- Strong planning, coordination, and organisational abilities
- Process-driven and system-focused approach to warehouse operations
