Sea Harvest is seeking an experienced Skipper to join its fleet operating out of Saldanha Bay on the West Coast. This role is responsible for the overall command and operation of the fishing vessel, ensuring crew safety, regulatory compliance, effective fishing operations, and optimal vessel performance.
Job Purpose
To oversee the safe and efficient operation of the fishing vessel, manage fishing activities, lead the crew, and navigate to optimal fishing grounds while ensuring compliance with all legal, safety, and company requirements.
Key Performance Areas
Safety and Legal Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with safe manning requirements and all SAMSA, Maritime OSH, and class regulations
- Enforce company watch-keeping procedures
- Ensure compliance with fishing regulations and permit conditions
Vessel Operations and Equipment Maintenance
- Ensure all vessel machinery and equipment are properly maintained and fully operational
- Monitor vessel condition to support continuous and efficient operations
Fishing Performance
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of fishing gear and equipment
- Exercise due caution when operating in hazardous fishing grounds
- Achieve defined fishing and production targets
Quality and Cost Control
- Ensure adherence to defined quality standards
- Operate the vessel within approved budgets and cost controls
Crew Management and Skills Development
- Maintain discipline and promote a harmonious working environment
- Lead, motivate, and manage the crew effectively
- Promote skills transfer and development among officers and crew
Qualifications and Competencies
- Fisherman Grade 2 or Skipper Fishing >24m (Limited Waters) certification
- Valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (unrestricted)
- Valid STCW certification
- Proven experience in Hake Bottom Trawling
- Previous experience as a Freezer Trawler Skipper
- Strong personnel management and safety awareness
- Fluent in spoken and written English
- Ability to follow company procedures and operational instructions
- Strong leadership and motivational skills
