Job Purpose

Sanlam Vacancies is seeking a Senior Legal Advisor to provide expert assessment and decision-making support on complex living benefits and risk-related claims. This role focuses on ensuring fair, compliant, and contractually sound outcomes while delivering clear communication and effective stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Claims Assessment and Legal Interpretation

  • Assess and independently decide on complex living benefit claims, including severe illness, disability, and sickness benefits
  • Interpret policy contracts and definitions to ensure claims decisions align with contractual terms and compliance requirements
  • Take full ownership of claim outcomes and related decision-making

Stakeholder Engagement and Advisory Support

  • Liaise with underwriters, legal teams, product development, medical professionals, reinsurers, and other stakeholders to resolve complex cases
  • Act as a technical point of contact for key intermediaries and high-value claims enquiries
  • Provide clear written and verbal communication to clients, intermediaries, and stakeholders throughout the claims process

Process Improvement and Governance

  • Propose and support improvements to claims assessment processes
  • Ensure adherence to claims guidelines, compliance standards, and governance frameworks
  • Manage complaints related to claims decisions with professionalism and sound judgement

Knowledge and Experience

Experience

  • Background in an occupational therapy or clinical medical role
  • 3–5 years’ experience in assessing living benefit, risk, or retail claims
  • Proven experience in complaints handling
  • Knowledge of risk products and benefits

Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma with 3–5 years’ relevant professional experience

Knowledge and Skills

  • Claims administration and settlement of complex claims
  • Approval and rejection of claims in line with policy and compliance requirements
  • Strong understanding of claims guidelines and regulatory frameworks
  • Ability to coach and develop others
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Afrikaans
  • Ability to work independently and manage complex matters
