Job Purpose
Sanlam Vacancies is seeking a Senior Legal Advisor to provide expert assessment and decision-making support on complex living benefits and risk-related claims. This role focuses on ensuring fair, compliant, and contractually sound outcomes while delivering clear communication and effective stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Claims Assessment and Legal Interpretation
- Assess and independently decide on complex living benefit claims, including severe illness, disability, and sickness benefits
- Interpret policy contracts and definitions to ensure claims decisions align with contractual terms and compliance requirements
- Take full ownership of claim outcomes and related decision-making
Stakeholder Engagement and Advisory Support
- Liaise with underwriters, legal teams, product development, medical professionals, reinsurers, and other stakeholders to resolve complex cases
- Act as a technical point of contact for key intermediaries and high-value claims enquiries
- Provide clear written and verbal communication to clients, intermediaries, and stakeholders throughout the claims process
Process Improvement and Governance
- Propose and support improvements to claims assessment processes
- Ensure adherence to claims guidelines, compliance standards, and governance frameworks
- Manage complaints related to claims decisions with professionalism and sound judgement
Knowledge and Experience
Experience
- Background in an occupational therapy or clinical medical role
- 3–5 years’ experience in assessing living benefit, risk, or retail claims
- Proven experience in complaints handling
- Knowledge of risk products and benefits
Qualifications
- Degree or Diploma with 3–5 years’ relevant professional experience
Knowledge and Skills
- Claims administration and settlement of complex claims
- Approval and rejection of claims in line with policy and compliance requirements
- Strong understanding of claims guidelines and regulatory frameworks
- Ability to coach and develop others
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Afrikaans
- Ability to work independently and manage complex matters
