Job Description
Sea Harvest Group Limited, a leading black-owned, responsible, and internationally recognised seafood and FMCG business, is seeking an experienced Skipper to join its fleet operating out of Saldanha Bay. The Skipper will oversee the operation of the fishing vessel, ensuring crew safety, managing fishing activities, and navigating to optimal fishing grounds.

Key Responsibilities

Safety and Compliance

• Ensure full compliance with safe manning, SAMSA, Maritime OSH, Class regulations, and company watch-keeping procedures.
• Adhere to all fishing regulations and permit conditions.
• Maintain a safe working environment for all crew members.

Vessel Operations & Equipment Maintenance

• Maintain all machinery and equipment in optimal working condition to support uninterrupted operations.
• Monitor vessel systems to prevent operational failures.

Fishing Performance

• Oversee the care and proper use of fishing gear and equipment.
• Exercise caution when operating on hazardous fishing grounds.
• Achieve fishing and production targets as defined.

Quality & Cost Control

• Maintain high standards of product quality throughout operations.
• Ensure vessel operations remain within allocated budgets.

Crew Management & Skill Development

• Maintain discipline and promote a harmonious working environment.
• Facilitate the transfer of skills from officers and managers to crew members.
• Motivate the crew to achieve operational and safety goals.

Qualifications & Competencies

• Fisherman Grade 2 or Skipper Fishing >24m (Limited Waters) certification.
• Valid unrestricted SAMSA Medical Certificate.
• Valid STCW documentation.
• Proven experience in Hake Bottom Trawling and as a Freezer Trawler Skipper.
• Strong personnel management and safety awareness skills.
• Fluent in spoken and written English.
• Ability to follow company procedures and motivate the team effectively.
