Job Description
Sea Harvest Group Limited, a leading black-owned and internationally recognised seafood and FMCG business, is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to join its fleet operating out of Saldanha Bay. The Chief Engineer ensures vessels operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with SAMSA and company regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Repairs and Maintenance
- Ensure vessels remain mechanically operational throughout voyages without unnecessary returns to port.
- Implement preventative maintenance procedures and oversee all repairs to maintain operational efficiency.
- Notify the Skipper and Superintendent of performance changes requiring immediate action or shore-based investigation.
- Maintain adequate inventory of spare parts to support uninterrupted operations.
Operations, Watchkeeping, and Bunkering
- Ensure all machinery functions effectively during sailing and trawling operations.
- Maintain hold temperatures at specified levels.
- Adhere to recognized watchkeeping practices.
- Ensure correct fuel grades and lubrication oils are loaded for each voyage.
Administration
- Plan and manage engineering stores for each trip, considering operational parameters and voyage length.
- Ensure all documentation complies with SAMSA and company requirements and is submitted to the relevant manager.
- Communicate operating and maintenance procedures to engine room staff.
- Update the planned maintenance system regularly.
Standards and Safety
- Take full responsibility for engine room safety and machinery operation.
- Ensure staff are familiar with emergency procedures and maintain good housekeeping practices.
- Operate machinery in compliance with international, South African, and company environmental regulations.
- Represent the Engineering Department during safety surveys, investigations, and audits by SAMSA, NOSA, Portnet, and company authorities.
Management and Training
- Develop officers’ skills and confidence through on-board training and guidance.
- Maintain discipline and handle grievances in accordance with company policies and the Merchant Shipping Act.
- Assess and mentor subordinates and engineering cadets on an ongoing basis.
Qualifications & Competencies
- Valid Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer (>2000KW Fishing).
- Valid unrestricted SAMSA Medical Certificate and STCW documentation.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as Second Engineer (unlimited); prior Chief Engineer experience advantageous.
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills.
- Proven personnel management and safety awareness capabilities.
- Proficient in technical report writing.
- Fluent in spoken and written English.
- Ability to follow company procedures and motivate team members effectively.
