Main Purpose of the Role
The Professional Nurse provides comprehensive healthcare services to adolescents and young people, addressing HIV, sexual and reproductive health, and overall wellbeing. The role involves delivering a defined package of interventions based on regular needs assessments, including HIV testing services (HTS) and self-screening, HIV prevention (PrEP), antiretroviral treatment (ART) and viral load monitoring, TB and STI screening and treatment, post-violence care, HPV screening, family planning, and linkage to specialist services. The Professional Nurse ensures high-quality care, treatment adherence, and completion while facilitating access to appropriate care channels for adolescents and young people.

Key Responsibilities

ART Initiation, TB, Hepatitis B & C, and NCDs Linkage to Care

  • Initiate all diagnosed HIV-positive clients on ART daily
  • Establish and maintain effective referral and care linkages with health facilities in the region
  • Ensure all clients testing positive for HIV, TB, Hepatitis B & C, and other NCDs (e.g., diabetes, hypertension) are linked to care, monitored, and supported for treatment completion
  • Manage a cohort of clients to ensure adherence, viral suppression, and successful treatment outcomes
  • Maintain accurate weekly, monthly, and quarterly case management reports and cohort follow-ups
  • Record and reconcile clinical materials, ART medications, and provide monthly inventories to the Project Manager

Outreach Clinical Services

  • Conduct adherence support clubs and group sessions in collaboration with psychosocial counsellors
  • Assess client needs and develop care plans with the Site Coordinator, Linkage Nurse, HTS Counsellors, and Linkage Officers
  • Provide outreach services including HTS, STI and TB screening, wound care, ART, PEP, PrEP, non-communicable disease screening, cervical cancer screening, family planning, and referral for specialist care
  • Collect sputum samples and initiate treatment for clients testing TB-positive
  • Ensure all clinical services adhere to National Department of Health guidelines and achieve or exceed programme targets
  • Promote ART adherence and viral suppression among HIV-positive clients

Project Support and Administration

  • Review HTS and ART registers daily and maintain up-to-date follow-up registers
  • Participate in weekly project meetings and stakeholder engagements
  • Supervise HTS Counsellors, Linkage Officers, and Social Auxiliary Workers
  • Update clinical records and registers, including referral, linkage, ART, and HTS data
  • Monitor drug supply, HIV rapid test kits, and compliance with Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP)
  • Track referrals and validate successful client linkages
  • Attend training, sensitisation sessions, and meetings as required by the organisation or funders

Organisational Support and Quality Assurance

  • Train and counsel staff on clinical ethics and professional conduct
  • Stay updated with clinical developments, guidelines, and policies
  • Ensure medical equipment, clinical supplies, and stationery are maintained and available
  • Implement quality assurance programmes, including Ideal Clinic Realisation and Maintenance (ICRM) and National Core Standards (NCS)
  • Participate in Rapid Test Continuous Quality Improvement, Independent Quality Control, and Proficiency Testing for HIV RDTs
  • Follow Anova vehicle management policies and travel to sites as required
  • Undertake additional responsibilities delegated by managers

Qualifications and Experience

  • Professional Nursing qualification with NIMART certification
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in project or operations management in HIV or public health programmes
  • Valid Code 8 driver’s license and ability to travel as required
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to speak at least one local language
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and update data registers
  • Highly organised, analytical, and able to interpret and act on health data effectively
