The Role:
We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Team Manager to join our BI Operations and Support team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead, manage, and develop a team of underwriting professionals, ensuring high-quality decision-making and compliance with company policies and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Staff Supervision & Leadership: Lead and manage the underwriting and support team, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure smooth team operations.
- Training & Development: Ensure that team members are well-trained in underwriting procedures, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Resource Allocation: Assess workloads and delegate tasks effectively to ensure operational efficiency. Adjust team responsibilities as needed to meet business goals.
- Team Motivation & Morale: Foster a positive, productive work environment by addressing concerns, motivating staff, and implementing team-building activities and incentives.
- Risk Assessment & Underwriting: Oversee the underwriting process for insurance policies, ensuring that risk evaluations are accurate, aligned with company guidelines, and meet regulatory standards.
- Compliance: Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with company policies, industry regulations, and best practices.
- Quality Control: Regularly monitor the quality of underwriting decisions and documentation, performing audits to maintain accuracy and completeness.
- Collaboration: Build and maintain strong relationships with Insurance Specialists and internal departments such as Claims and Actuarial to achieve business goals.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Matric/Grade 12
- Certifications: RE, FAIS Credits, and up-to-date CPD training
Minimum Experience:
- At least 3 years of commercial insurance underwriting experience.
- Expert knowledge of MiWay Business Insurance systems (MIA and TIA).
- Thorough understanding of commercial insurance products.
- Experience in client servicing is an advantage.

- FAIS Regulatory Examination for Representatives (RE5) is required.
Key Deliverables:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Insurance Specialist teams.
- Manage and grow a team of efficient and proficient support agents.
- Underwrite commercial policies, ensuring acceptable risk profiles and structuring cover options.
- Collaborate with internal departments, including Claims and Actuarial, to support business processes.
- Assist Insurance Specialists in reaching sales targets while maintaining acceptable loss ratios.
