Sanlam Vacancies – Territorial Lead

Role Overview

As a Territorial Lead, you’ll be responsible for managing reinsurance underwriting within your assigned territory. Your focus will include developing and maintaining treaty and facultative reinsurance portfolios, ensuring profitability, and building lasting relationships with brokers and cedants locally and internationally.

Location: Cape Town, South Africa (Relocation required, with occasional travel).

Key Responsibilities

  • Portfolio Management:
    • Develop and lead a profitable reinsurance treaty book in your territory.
    • Ensure portfolio profitability meets annual targets (minimum 5% margin).
    • Analyze BI statistics and propose corrective actions to optimize performance.
    • Manage underwriting processes, including pricing, wording, and risk evaluation.
  • Business Development:
    • Build and maintain relationships with reinsurance brokers and cedants.
    • Drive growth by identifying and securing new business opportunities.
    • Represent Santam Re in marketing efforts and industry engagements.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Provide direction, training, and development for team members.
    • Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Operational Excellence:
    • Monitor accounts, payments, and profitability of treaties.
    • Ensure compliance with internal guidelines during client and broker negotiations.
    • Support internal stakeholders with portfolio queries and referrals.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with internal teams to ensure data integrity, risk management, and compliance.
    • Actively contribute to strategic discussions and decision-making processes.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree (preferably in a scientific, engineering, or numerate discipline).
  • 5–6 years of experience in the short-term insurance industry (preferably reinsurance, finance, or risk management).
  • 2–3 years of team management or leadership experience.

Advantageous:

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field.
  • Expertise in reinsurance principles, underwriting, and treaty negotiations.
  • Strong knowledge of geographic insurance markets in target regions.
