Sasol careers – Technician I Electrical

Purpose of the Role:
As a Technician I Electrical, you will be responsible for ensuring the stability and integrity of protection and control systems across all electrical switchgear and equipment within the Secunda complex. This includes Low Voltage (LV), Medium Voltage (MV), and High Voltage (HV) systems. Your role will involve maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and ensuring that electrical systems meet Sasol’s high safety and performance standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct protection schemes and control systems quality checks.
  • Perform integrity testing on Current Transformers (CTs) and Voltage Transformers (VTs).
  • Carry out detailed fault-finding on energized electrical equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve on-site electrical protection system failures.
  • Reconfigure and replace outdated Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) to the latest versions.
  • Perform protection maintenance tests, scheme tests, and other specialized electrical tests.
  • Fault-find and test electrical cables (LV to HV).
  • Assist in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) of electrical switchgear to ensure compliance with Sasol standards.
  • Participate in plant start-up support, trip/malfunction investigations, and provide technical support to the broader Secunda complex.
  • Participate in Potential Deviation Analyses (PDAs), Root Cause Analyses (RCAs), and Management of Change (MOCs).
  • Provide input on Failure Mode and Effect Analyses (FMEAs).

Qualifications and Experience:

  • National Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience in electrical maintenance or testing.
  • Test Technician experience will be advantageous.
  • Solid understanding of electrical protection devices, IEDs, electrical machines (motors, generators, transformers), LV to HV cables, and switchgear.
  • Basic knowledge of SCADA and transfer systems.
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s License is required.

  • Analytical Thinking: Capable of analyzing system metrics and identifying potential issues through PDAs and RCAs.
