Vacancy Details

The Senior Specialist: Employee Relations will ensure legislative compliance relating to income tax by developing policies and procedures, monitoring and auditing their implementation, and providing advice to the business. This role supports the Company’s taxation strategy for both direct and indirect tax, ensuring full compliance with taxation requirements and legislation. Additionally, this position advises the Tax Manager on unusual or irregular transactions to proactively address all tax consequences in agreements.

Position Outputs:

  • Prepare the Provisional Tax Calculation.
  • Provide technical advice and opinions in conjunction with Group Tax on transactions, including transactional analysis of various projects.
  • Reconcile monthly Tax FAR to Book FAR.
  • Ensure the system is configured to calculate tax and depreciation allowances correctly according to SARS rates and company policy.
  • Analyze monthly reconciliation of the fixed assets register to the GL to ensure accuracy.
  • Review exception reports to ensure appropriate processes were used, and follow up on exceptions with corrective actions:
    • Fixed assets below R7,000 written off to R1 for tax purposes in the Tax Asset Register.
    • Differences between Tax FAR and book FAR.
    • Assets with negative net tax values.
    • Assets with negative acquisition cost.
    • Amendments to the Masterfile exception report.
  • Reconcile assets disposed of for accounting purposes to recoupment/scrapping allowance calculation and capital gains tax calculation, investigating and resolving differences.
  • Analyze asset disposal reports for accuracy and completeness, ensuring all movements are accounted for in current and deferred tax computations.
  • Prepare monthly calculations of annual tax liability/asset (current and deferred) and compile tax reports for the Tax system One Source.
  • Prepare monthly and annual VAT returns, ensuring accurate calculations and timely submissions, and liaise with Group Tax to resolve outstanding queries.
  • Address tax-related issues identified in external audit management letters or internal control reports promptly and satisfactorily.
  • Archive and keep income tax documentation in accordance with legislation, ensuring records are safely stored and accessible when needed.
  • Ensure documentation supporting customs, VAT, and income tax legislation is submitted.
  • Analyze Copex spend to ensure correct tax treatment.
  • Review accounting policies to identify and address tax consequences.
  • Analyze repairs and maintenance from a tax perspective to identify capital items requiring add back in the tax computation.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Senior Certificate.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting with a focus on tax.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in an accounting environment, with a minimum of 2 years of direct tax experience.
  • Trust and honesty in handling finances as per the National Credit Act Amendment 19.
  • Must undergo a Lifestyle Audit.

Standard Job Requirements:

  • Driver’s license code 08.
  • Willingness to travel as required.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of income tax legislation.
  • Understanding of VAT legislation.
  • Proficiency in income tax compliance principles and processes.
  • Proficiency in VAT compliance principles and processes.
  • Understanding of Corporate Governance (e.g., King report I, II, and III).
