About the Role:
As a Senior Engineer – Rotating Equipment, you will be responsible for optimizing the health and performance of Sasol’s rotating equipment assets, such as pumps, compressors, turbines, motors, and gearboxes. You will leverage advanced monitoring and diagnostic techniques to minimize downtime, ensure equipment integrity, and maximize reliability. This role is key to driving continuous improvement and ensuring the safe, efficient operation of turbo machinery across Sasol’s facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Rotating Equipment Performance & Health Assessment: Conduct in-depth assessments using condition monitoring tools (vibration analysis, oil analysis, etc.) to evaluate equipment performance and predict failure risks.
  • Operational Optimization: Set standards for the operation, maintenance, and optimization of turbo machinery, ensuring compliance with global best practices and Sasol’s internal standards.
  • Data-Driven Solutions: Utilize advanced digitalization tools (e.g., machine learning, numerical modelling) to improve asset management and enhance the performance and reliability of rotating equipment.
  • Condition Monitoring & Diagnostics: Develop and implement health and performance dashboards to enable real-time asset visibility and improve decision-making. Apply condition-based maintenance techniques to optimize reliability and reduce costs.
  • Failure & Incident Investigation: Lead failure investigations, including Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA), and recommend corrective actions to prevent future issues.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Act as a technical leader, providing guidance to junior engineers and driving knowledge transfer across the team.
  • Life Extension & Capital Projects: Develop life extension strategies for critical equipment, and support capital/renewal projects with technical expertise and engineering solutions.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Qualifications:
    • BSc (Engineering) or BEng (Mechanical) or Equivalent
    • Master’s Degree in Turbo Machinery (preferred)
    • Certification in Reliability and Asset Management (CMRP, ARP)
    • Professional registration as an engineer (Pr. Eng)
    • Certification in Condition Monitoring (vibration, oil analysis, etc.)
  • Experience:
    • 8+ years of relevant experience in rotating equipment engineering, preferably within an industrial or energy sector.
    • Proven track record in using advanced engineering tools such as FEM, CFD, rotor dynamics, and other numerical modelling techniques.
    • Strong understanding of asset management strategies (RCM, FMEA, MTTR, MTBF).
    • Experience with capital project execution, equipment procurement, and technical specification writing.
  • Technical Competencies:
    • Expertise in rotating equipment design, condition monitoring, and failure analysis.
    • Proficiency in using digital tools for performance analysis, modelling, and simulation.
    • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply engineering principles to complex operational issues.
