Transnet Vacancies – Senior Systems Developer

As a Senior Systems Developer, you will:

  • Strategy and Planning: Collaborate with all ICT functional areas to ensure solutions can be delivered using innovative digital platforms. Research, analyze, and design proof-of-concept solutions using cutting-edge digital technologies. Assist in the preparation and documentation of solution requirements and specifications for both new and existing digital solutions.
  • Operational Management: Produce high-quality technical specifications aligned with architectural standards. Develop optimized solutions based on technical specifications. Perform quality assurance, unit testing, integration testing, and User Acceptance Testing (UAT). Support continuous integration and deployment using DevOps principles. Provide 24/7 production support, including incident analysis and resolution.
  • Change and Release Management: Lead development efforts on projects and manage applications through their life cycle. Implement best practices in governance and ensure compliance with ICT SDLC methodology. Participate in change and release management processes relevant to the department and RACI.
  • Team Leadership: Manage team members to align with delivery requirements, including production support. Mentor junior staff and lead resolution in terms of incidents and problems. Drive the adoption of Agile/DevOps methodologies and foster a culture of support and trust within the team.
  • Acquisition and Implementation of IT Solutions: Build relationships with the software development team and other departmental teams to understand solution architectures and required functionality. Engage with software vendors to leverage leading digital technologies. Participate in workshops with business users to gather requirements and understand business needs.
  • Research and Development: Conduct research on emerging application development best practices, languages, and standards. Stay informed about the latest versions of current technologies. Develop and implement upgrade plans for solutions throughout their life cycle.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or Computer Science. A relevant Post-Graduate Diploma or Degree is a plus.
  • Certifications: ITIL Foundation, TOGAF, COBIT, ISO 20000, or Agile DevOps certification.
  • Experience: 5-8 years of mainframe development and support experience. A minimum of 8 years of experience in supervising activities, diagnostic work, and quality workflow. At least 3 years of experience at a supervisory/managerial level or as a specialist. Transnet Leadership Development Programme is advantageous.
  • General Requirements: Valid Code 8 driver’s license, willingness to travel, and flexibility to work extended hours as needed to support production issues or meet project deadlines.

  • Effective management of ICT operations teams that deliver multi-disciplinary ICT solutions and services.
  • Implementation of governance to manage risks and ensure compliance.
  • Strategic and tactical planning capabilities for delivering digital business solutions.
  • Proven leadership skills, including team effectiveness and managing transformation and change.
  • Technical experience in legacy and future technologies aligned with the Transnet Technology Landscape.
