Sasol careers – Senior Specialist Trader

Purpose of the Role
As a Senior Specialist Trader, you will manage critical trading activities for Sasol Energy, including crude oil procurement, petroleum product sales, risk management, and market analysis. This role requires a seasoned trading professional with a proven track record and strong industry relationships to meet supply and demand requirements while optimizing margins.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Trading Strategy and Execution
    • Develop and implement medium- and long-term trading strategies for crude oil and clean products.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks across regions.
    • Evaluate, recommend, and manage relationships with trading counterparts, including NOCs, IOCs, and independent traders.
    • Report on trading risk matters and update risk matrices.
    • Provide forward pricing insights for refinery models and planning.
  2. Commercial Trading
    • Execute daily trading activities for crude oil and refined products, making real-time decisions to achieve targets.
    • Build and sustain strong relationships with industry counterparts to create business opportunities.
    • Negotiate and document contracts for crude oil and product purchases and sales.
    • Support hedging strategies using appropriate financial instruments.
  3. Market Analysis and Coordination
    • Monitor global crude oil and petroleum markets for pricing trends and trading opportunities.
    • Develop and manage trading models and information databases.
    • Foster collaboration with internal teams, including refinery, planning, and hedging units.
  4. Counterparty Management
    • Identify and evaluate new counterparties to optimize trading returns.
    • Develop oil trading strategies and tactics to meet delivery targets.
    • Ensure comprehensive knowledge of refinery planning and crude logistics.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Economics, Finance, Logistics, or Engineering.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years in crude oil planning, refinery operations, or trading, with at least 4–5 years in crude oil or product trading.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong collaboration and process optimization skills.
  • Expertise in trading risk management, contract negotiation, and compliance.
  • Solid understanding of logistics, reporting, and market analysis.
  • Action-oriented, accountable, and capable of building internal and external stakeholder relationships.
