Armscor Vacancies – Senior Scientist : Electro Optics

Purpose of the Job:

The Senior Scientist: Electro Optics will provide expert systems and technology support to the South African Navy and other clients. This role involves managing and executing technically complex projects, leading a team of specialists, and contributing to the development and application of naval systems.

Job Objectives:

  • Project Management: Oversee and execute scientifically complex projects involving multiple specialists and support personnel.
  • Expert Contribution: Contribute to the development, integration, application, and analysis of naval systems within the electro-optics domain.
  • Computer Modelling: Develop and utilize complex computer models to simulate and interpret results, ensuring mathematical verification.
  • Capability Development: Provide inputs to long-term capability development plans and advise on technology implementation for medium-term readiness.
  • Design Tasks: Undertake complex hardware and software design tasks as required.
  • Reporting: Prepare scientific reports detailing raw data, interpretation of results, and recommendations.
  • Solution Development: Translate client expectations into cost-effective scientific solutions and document complex problem resolutions.
  • System Testing: Execute and document system tests (hardware/software) and interpret measured results.
  • Scientific Decision-Making: Make complex scientific decisions and identify opportunities for process improvement within IMT.
  • Consultancy and Networking: Offer expert consultancy, influence stakeholders, and identify new business opportunities. Network with industry and academia to stay updated on technology advancements.
  • Professional Development: Engage in professional development to maintain and extend competence and mentor less experienced team members.
  • Representation: Represent IMT at conferences, seminars, and workshops, enhancing client relationships and ensuring continued business.

Qualifications:

  • MSc Degree in applicable Science (Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics)
  • PhD (advantageous)

Experience:

  • 7-9 years’ experience in applied science, with proficiency in software programming (preferably C++/C# or Matlab)
  • Experience in the military environment (advantageous)
  • Expertise in scientific data analysis, mathematical/statistical tools, software/mathematical modelling, simulation, and electro-optic sensing technology

Knowledge & Functional Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of modelling, simulation, and solution procedures
  • Proficiency in relevant software/modelling packages
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific processes, hardware/software design, and techno-maritime environments
  • Knowledge of Safety, Health, and Environmental legislation and standards
