 Anova Vacancies – Senior Data Scientist

Job Description
Anova Health Institute, an NGO dedicated to improving lives through quality healthcare, is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our team. This role involves providing expert technical knowledge and data science leadership to the Provincial Health Data Centre, aiming to enhance patient care within the Western Cape Government Department of Health & Wellness. The Senior Data Scientist will lead in both technical and operational aspects, managing all stages of the health data science workflow including data integration, transformation, modeling, analysis, reporting, visualization, and governance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Leverage domain expertise and analytical skills to support the development and maintenance of data take-on processes and routine health data curation.
• Engage actively in data beneficiation, interpretation, analysis, and reporting.
• Handle and deliver on data requests of varying complexity.
• Supervise and mentor junior data personnel as required.
• Develop and implement training programs, user guides, and other resources to enhance understanding of the Provincial Health Data Centre tools.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

• Postgraduate qualification in fields such as Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics, Demography, Biostatistics, or Epidemiology.
• At least 5 years of experience in enterprise data science or a related field, including up to 3 years of full-time master’s or PhD training.
• Experience with health information systems and data interoperability.
• Proficiency in SQL programming.
• Experience handling large datasets (hundreds of millions of records) and expertise in programming and software development.
• Strong statistical and software programming skills.
• Experience with stored procedures, views, and scripting languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R).
• Proven experience in technical communication and idea presentation.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

• Adaptability to work in a fast-paced environment and adjust plans as needed.
• Advanced knowledge and proficiency with cloud technologies, including Azure SQL, and interactive data visualization tools such as Power BI.
• Ability to design databases and create ETL processes.
• Proficient coding skills in one or more computer or statistical environments, with a willingness to learn others.
• Strong analytical skills for data extraction and analysis.
• Expertise in conceptualizing, designing, and implementing data-driven reports.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to create, edit, and review reports and presentations effectively.
