Job Description
Dis-Chem Pharmacies in Johannesburg is seeking Security Guards to provide essential security services in compliance with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001, as amended. The successful candidates will play a crucial role in safeguarding the assets, property, and staff of the Dis-Chem Group by creating a safe and secure environment. Responsibilities include identifying signs of criminal activity, investigating disturbances, and adhering to industry legislation and best practices.

Minimum Requirements

Essential:

• Grade 12 – Matric or Senior Certificate
• Grade C accreditation with PSIRA
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in the retail industry, including shopping malls and warehouses

Advantageous:

• At least 1 year of specific previous experience in a similar role

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain vigilance to identify suspicious activities and apprehend criminals or remove violators according to legal authority and Dis-Chem standard operating procedures.
• Conduct random patrols of the premises to ensure optimal visibility and reduce security risks.
• Monitor and control access to the premises, documenting and regulating entry for vehicles and pedestrians.
• Investigate and report signs of damage or unlawful entry to management, taking appropriate action to protect Dis-Chem assets.
• Serve as a visible deterrent to discourage criminal activities and prevent theft, damage, and personal injury.
• Provide professional and courteous service to guests, customers, and employees.
• Perform access control measures, including searching staff, suppliers, and company merchandisers.
• Maintain and complete all registers and occurrence books.
• Supervise refuse removal according to Dis-Chem standards.
• Protect company property and assets from dishonest individuals and malicious actions.
• Remain present at the designated post at all times while on duty.
• Foster good customer service relations with all Dis-Chem internal and external customers.
• Report unusual or suspicious behavior by staff, customers, or suppliers.
• Participate in opening and closing procedures, ensuring that all doors and windows are securely locked at the end of the day and that all taps are turned off when applicable.
• Conduct daily personnel searches and vehicle checks.
• Report any suspicious incidents to management and submit detailed written reports as required.
• Contact police and emergency authorities as needed, following Dis-Chem procedures.
• Maintain vigilance during crisis situations and report findings to management.
• Monitor alarm systems and video cameras, operating emergency equipment as necessary.
• Provide assistance to emergency teams during emergencies and maintain order during evacuation procedures.
• Offer ongoing security advice and safety tips to ensure compliance with safety precautions.
• Stay alert to identify breaches in security measures and respond quickly to crises.
• Document unusual occurrences and daily activities accurately.
• Enforce rules and regulations to prevent criminal activity proactively.
• Perform special duties such as receiving phone calls, responding to messages, and running errands as required.

Competencies

Essential:

• Knowledge of PSIRA regulations
• Fire emergency and health and safety training
• Proficiency in English (read, write, and speak)

Advantageous:

• Proficiency in a third language

Special Conditions of Employment:

• PSIRA registration and Grade C PSIRA accreditation
• South African citizen
• Clear MIE, criminal, and credit records
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transport; PDP required if deployed as a driver
