Transnet Vacancies – Second Engineer Officer

As a Second Engineer Officer at Transnet, you will represent the fleet department with overall responsibility and accountability while operating within port limits. Your primary duties will include maintaining and operating propulsion engines, other engines, deck machinery, refrigeration, and sanitary equipment aboard the vessel. You will coordinate and direct subordinates, ensuring compliance with statutory laws, company policies, and safety regulations to maximize dredger availability.

Position Outputs

  1. Annual Maintenance Planning: Plan, compile, and control annual lay-up maintenance to ensure controlled expenditure.
  2. Contractor Liaison: Liaise with and manage external contractors to ensure repairs and maintenance meet specifications and cost requirements.
  3. Preventative Maintenance: Plan and control preventative maintenance systems to minimize downtime.
  4. Dredger Preparation: Organize and prepare the dredger for sea operations, ensuring seaworthiness.
  5. Spare Parts Management: Work with the maintenance manager to ensure timely ordering of spares and parts, reducing dredger downtime.
  6. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to local and international maritime laws.
  7. Daily Maintenance Execution: Plan and execute daily maintenance tasks with engine room personnel.
  8. Skills Enhancement: Upskill by gaining exposure to OEM parts and machinery to reduce reliance on external contractors and agents.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Trust and Honesty: Requirement of trust and honesty in handling finances as per the National Credit Act Amendment 19.
  • Certification: STCW 95 Certificate of Competency, Second Engineer Class 2, issued by the South African Maritime Safety Authority. Must be endorsed as Chief Engineer Port Ops by SAMSA.
  • Job Requirements: Valid driver’s license (code 08) and ability to travel as required and approved.
