Transnet Vacancies – Principal Project Manager

We are seeking an experienced Principal Project Manager (PPM) to lead the successful delivery of large programs and projects. This position reports to the General Manager of Capital & Strategic Projects, Research & Development, and Continuous Improvement (GM: C&SP). The PPM has overall accountability for the scope, cost, schedule, and quality of all project phases and plays a hands-on role in project activities. The PPM provides consistent updates to project sponsors, the GM, and the project team on progress, costs, issues, and concerns, ensuring that all aspects of the project are effectively managed.

Key Responsibilities

As a Principal Project Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Project Oversight: Ensure the successful delivery of large programs and projects, maintaining accountability for scope, cost, schedule, and quality throughout all project phases.
  • Safety and Compliance: Promote a safety-first culture, ensuring projects comply with all regulatory requirements, company policies, and safety procedures. Achieve safety targets and fulfill statutory obligations as Safety Administrator.
  • Team Management: Develop an appropriate organizational structure, select experienced personnel, and delegate responsibilities effectively to build a result-oriented team.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Maintain a strong relationship with senior executives and clients, providing regular updates and addressing project concerns. Ensure effective communication across project teams and business units.
  • Project Planning and Control: Establish specific policies and procedures for project execution, coordinate the development of project budgets, and monitor progress regularly. Conduct project review meetings, ensuring adherence to the Project Execution Plan (PEP).
  • Cost Control and Reporting: Oversee project budgets, control capital expenditure, and ensure strict control over variations and contingency. Provide detailed monthly status reports to stakeholders.
  • Scope and Change Management: Ensure adherence to the project’s authorized Scope of Work, monitor scope status, and manage change requests from clients.
  • Project Transition: Coordinate the transition from project execution to the operational phase, ensuring a smooth handover to the business. Develop plans for project handover and facilitate operating and maintenance strategies.
  • Strategic Decision Making: Engage in decision-making regarding project implementation that is not delegated to other Project Managers.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • A BSc Eng/B Eng/BSc Honours in Construction Management or equivalent.
  • Professional registration as PrCPM in terms of SACPCMP requirements.
  • Preferable: Advanced degrees in management-related disciplines (MBA, MBL, MSc Project Management, BCom).
  • PMP certification or equivalent is preferred.
  • At least 10 years of experience, with a minimum of 6 years in a Senior Project Management position, ideally in the hydrocarbon/petrochemical sector.
  • A valid driver’s license (Code B or 08).

Competencies

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Expertise in business planning, financial modeling, and facilitation skills
  • Strong presentation, report writing, and coaching skills
  • Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP, Primavera, etc.) and procurement processes (NEC3, FIDIC, etc.)
  • Excellent time management, budget control, and change agent skills
