Job Description
Anova Health Institute, an NGO committed to improving lives through healthcare solutions, is seeking an Outreach Professional Nurse to join our Jab Smart project. Launched in late 2017, this peer-led initiative focuses on providing harm reduction services to people who use drugs (PWUD) in Johannesburg Metro, addressing the high risk of HIV and stigma they face. The project is implemented with the COJ Health District and supported by the Global Fund through its partner NACOSA.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Transport and Logistics:
- Ensure safe and secure transportation of staff and the mobile clinic to and from outreach sites and offices.
- Manage the mobile clinic or work vehicle, including maintaining fuel, mileage, and maintenance records as directed.
- Load and unload field equipment (e.g., chairs, tents, generators) each shift.
- Handle vehicle items correctly and report any damages.
- Adhere to the National Road Traffic Act and Anova’s vehicle SOP and safety requirements.
- Keep up-to-date with Anova’s vehicle policy.
- Drive the team to work sites and comply with Anova’s vehicle management policy.
- Submit weekly vehicle inspection checklists and report any incidents or accidents.
Outreach Support Work:
- Provide integrated, client-centered HTS (HIV Testing Services) support.
- Conduct HTS according to National HIV Counselling and Testing policies and guidelines.
- Navigate HIV-positive clients to appropriate facilities and initiate ART for newly diagnosed clients.
- Ensure IQC (Internal Quality Control) is performed and recorded as per SOP.
- Adhere to HTS, waste management, and infection control guidelines.
- Encourage PWUDs to seek healthcare services, including HCT and STI screenings.
- Ensure adequate HTS supplies and proper storage in the field, using a cooler box for testing supplies.
- Support the professional nurse with mobile clinic supply management.
Administration Support Work:
- Complete and submit all client data daily.
- Maintain accurate records in the DoH HTS register.
- Report high-quality HTS data daily and address data queries within 24 hours.
- Monitor HTS data to ensure targets are met and perform delegated administrative tasks as required.
- Maintain professional conduct in accordance with policies.
- Develop strong relationships with health facilities to ensure effective linkage to care for referred PWID.
- Submit timesheets in a timely manner.
- Perform other tasks as agreed with the line manager.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Required:
- Degree or diploma qualification as a Professional Nurse.
- Registration as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
- NIMART (Nurse Initiated Management of ART) qualification is essential.
- Dispensing license required.
- Valid Driver’s License with PDP and at least 3 years of driving experience.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an HIV/AIDS counselling and testing (HCT) setting.
- At least 2 years’ experience as a registered nurse with knowledge of the PWID community and relevant issues.
- Familiarity with the latest HIV Management, TB, and PMTCT guidelines.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and report-writing skills.
- Strong organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and attention to detail.
- Strong team orientation and planning skills.
