Nightshift Controller – Value Logistics

Purpose of the Role
The Nightshift Controller is responsible for coordinating and supervising nightshift transport and delivery operations to ensure efficient, safe, and on-time service delivery. This role oversees driver attendance, vehicle readiness, route planning, dispatch activities, and operational compliance while maintaining high service standards and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Management

  • Supervise driver attendance, absenteeism, and shift registers to ensure optimal staffing levels

  • Oversee vehicle loading and preloading activities to support timely dispatch

  • Coordinate driver requirements in collaboration with labour brokers and regional management

  • Ensure accurate capture of driver hours for weekly wage reporting

  • Manage fuel processes including refuelling, fuel usage tracking, card control, and reconciliations

  • Ensure fleet condition and readiness in line with company standards and operational manuals

  • Coordinate daily route planning, vehicle dispatch, loading and offloading, and documentation handovers

  • Ensure compliance with procedures relating to accidents, product claims, and vehicle breakdowns

  • Maintain continuous communication with the Account Manager on operational performance and challenges

  • Debrief driver trip sheets and verify information against vehicle tracking data

  • Supervise pre- and post-trip inspections, logbooks, workshop bookings, and COF checks

  • Manage ad hoc vehicle and operational requirements as needed

  • Verify that all driver documentation is valid and current, including licences, PDPs, medical certificates, and specialist certifications

  • Control the issuance and use of PPE and uniforms for on-site staff

  • Ensure all vehicles have functional tracking units and coordinate repairs when required

  • Maintain high housekeeping standards across the site to ensure a safe and orderly environment

  • Conduct monthly panic button tests and tyre surveys

  • Ensure deliveries are executed in line with planning requirements and safety standards

  • Confirm that loads are secure prior to dispatch

  • Ensure secure storage of all vehicle keys at the end of each shift

Administration & Reporting

  • Compile, supervise, and submit accurate operational and management reports, including daily, weekly, fleet, utilisation, fuel, tracking, and performance reports

  • Supervise the completion, handover, and sign-off of all customer-related documentation

Customer Service & Relationship Management

  • Maintain strong customer relationships by consistently meeting service level commitments

  • Monitor customer KPIs and service level agreements to ensure performance targets are achieved

  • Prepare and present customer performance reports, operational feedback, and proactively highlight risks or constraints

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong fleet and route management skills with sound local geographical knowledge

  • Proven staff supervision and coordination abilities

  • Strong operational and administrative reporting skills

  • Effective problem-solving and analytical thinking

  • High level of administrative accuracy and attention to detail

  • Customer-focused approach with strong service orientation

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Working knowledge of Freightware
