Sasol careers – Maintenance Superintendent

The Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for providing leadership to create high-performance teams capable of meeting targets. This role includes coaching teams to function independently while ensuring statutory duties are executed according to Regulation 2.14.1.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage and execute tactical strategies to meet departmental KPIs, including equipment availability, downtime, Mean Time To Failure (MTTF), Mean Time To Repair (MTTR), and adherence to the overhaul/maintenance program (planned vs. actual).
  • Implement operational projects and ensure compliance with engineering Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within the appointed area of responsibility. Ensure adherence to operating principles, legislation, and governance bodies (e.g., standardisation committees).
  • Support departments in achieving targets by coordinating planning, including Rand per ton, meters per shift, road construction, belt installations, and volumes vs. monthly TQF (including quality).
  • Control costs to ensure production volumes are achieved within budget and monitor delivery against budget and reporting calendar vs. target.
  • Ensure optimal safety performance by continuously improving key safety metrics to maintain required RCR and SHE compliance rates vs. targets, with a focus on zero harm, zero fatalities, and LWDCR. Implement basic Sasol SHE standards.
  • Manage recruitment, training, coaching, and career development, focusing on vacancy rates, absenteeism, employee engagement, and training days for the department. Monitor planned task observations and successorship for critical positions.

Operating Environment
The position has a 2.14.1 legal appointment and is accountable for managing operational solutions and governance within a highly regulated mining environment. This includes managing remote locations, underground equipment, and infrastructure, ensuring availability to meet production targets, and working with contractors and suppliers. The role involves analyzing, interpreting, and integrating information from various sources to make trade-off decisions in the best interest of the area of responsibility.

Formal Education

  • Grade 12/N3 with Mathematics, Physical Science, and English or Business English
  • Engineering University Bachelor’s Degree/B Tech
  • Higher/Advanced Diploma in Engineering
  • Mine Overseer Certificate of Competence for Fiery Mines

Working Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant mining experience in production or production services, with a focus on production section belts.
