Fidelity Vacancies – Junior Firefighter-Western Cape
Positions are available for Junior Firefighters within the Fidelity Group to respond to and manage all fire-related incidents in the Western Cape region.
The primary responsibilities of the role include firefighting, emergency rescue services, providing basic medical care, conducting fire prevention and training activities, and operating and maintaining firefighting equipment and apparatus. These tasks aim to protect the lives and property of the Fidelity Group’s clients.
Key Responsibilities:
The Junior Firefighter will work under the guidance and supervision of senior officers and the officer-in-charge. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Responding to fire incidents, rescues, and both emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Attending incidents involving hazardous substances.
- Extricating or releasing casualties and performing emergency operations as directed by higher-level authority.
- Administering basic medical treatment and resuscitating injured individuals during emergency operations.
- Operating a variety of equipment to control and extinguish fires effectively.
- Undertaking fire protection duties in situations that pose risks to lives or property.
- Preparing for emergency incidents and performing protective duties under supervision.
- Participating in training drills, simulation exercises, and physical fitness training as required.
- Training employees on fire-fighting techniques and emergency response protocols.
- Providing advice on preventative and corrective measures.
- Implementing procedures, strategies, and using the appropriate equipment to support local or national security efforts.
- Performing basic maintenance on equipment to ensure operational readiness.
- Checking, cleaning, testing, and maintaining vehicles and firefighting equipment.
- Completing computerized occurrence logs to maintain accurate records.
- Conducting health and safety inspections to ensure a safe work environment.
- Completing necessary documentation and participating in Health and Safety Committee meetings.
- Driving and operating specialized vehicles and machinery to handle emergency incidents.
- Ensuring the safe and effective operation of fire apparatus and emergency equipment to save lives and protect property.
- Assisting with Fire and Safety training, fire safety inspections, and conducting life safety education.
- Ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act by conducting safety inspections, ensuring subordinates are using prescribed protective clothing, and adhering to policies to prevent loss or injury.
- Ensuring equipment maintenance schedules are followed and performing repairs as needed to ensure operational readiness.
- Completing shift-related administrative routines in line with departmental policy.
- Supervising personnel and fulfilling related management functions.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A minimum of Grade 12 qualification.
- IFSAC Accreditation.
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter 2 certification.
- Firefighter II Certification.
- At least 2-3 years of firefighting training and related experience.
- Valid Code C1 driver’s license with a PrDP.
- Advanced driving experience is an advantage.
- Medically and physically fit.
- A solid understanding of fire prevention procedures.
- Knowledge of fire-fighting systems, including systems used to extinguish fires and the chemistry of fire.
- A clear criminal record.
- Ability to react efficiently in emergency situations.
- Strong administration, interpersonal communication, and customer liaison skills.
- Hazmat experience and knowledge is essential.
- EMT certification.
- First Aid certification (Levels 1-3).
Core Competencies:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Comprehensive understanding of Hazmat guidelines.
- Knowledge of the security industry and the code of conduct within the Group and Regulatory Authority.
- Understanding of the fundamental elements of firefighter instructor applications within an operational role.
