Position: HTS Counsellor
Main Job Purpose: The HTS Counsellor will focus on engaging with and supporting men who have sex with men (MSM) to utilize health services. This role involves marketing the organization’s campaigns and resources, establishing and maintaining relationships with community organizations, clinics, and safe spaces, and hosting educational events.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Community Outreach Services:
- Build and sustain functional relationships with MSM groups, community-based organizations, Shebeens/Safe Spaces, and clinics.
- Plan and execute meetings and events, including workshops on responsible sex and training sessions.
- Disseminate educational materials, condoms, and lubricants to raise awareness and promote responsible sex practices.
- Enhance the organization’s presence in communities by promoting our services and encouraging MSM to seek healthcare, including HCT and STI screenings.
- Provide feedback on community dynamics affecting MSM and assist with recruitment for focus groups, research, and training.
- Perform administrative tasks as assigned by the Outreach Coordinator and Office Manager.
- Maintain a timesheet of community activities and attend regular supervision meetings.
- Travel to other provinces as needed.
HCT/VCT Counselling:
- Build rapport with clients and manage client information confidentially.
- Conduct pre- and post-counseling assessments and support clients’ coping strategies.
- Perform HTS and screening for TB and STIs, and collect HTS data from clients.
- Refer clients to appropriate resources and ensure adherence to ethical counseling guidelines.
- Facilitate support groups, community mobilization, and other related activities.
- Comply with H4Men standard operating procedures and encourage medication adherence.
Administration:
- Compile and submit monthly reports on H4Men activities.
- File patient records and referral forms accurately.
- Carry out additional tasks as requested.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Required:
- Grade 12
- Experience working with MSM and knowledge of HIV is advantageous.
- Proven experience in organizing community-based events and fostering relationships.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and engage effectively with the community.
- Empathy and understanding of issues affecting people living with HIV/AIDS.
- Friendly demeanor and ability to connect with individuals.
