Job Overview
The Health and Safety Specialist supports the development, implementation, and governance of occupational health and safety systems across manufacturing and logistics operations. This role partners with site and head office teams to ensure compliance with legal and corporate safety standards, strengthen risk management, and promote a proactive safety culture through data-driven insights, audits, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support alignment of national health and safety strategy with global QSE requirements and local legal obligations

  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and standardization of health and safety policies, procedures, and frameworks

  • Plan and coordinate internal health and safety audits to assess compliance with ISO 45001, KORE, and legislative requirements

  • Consolidate audit findings and monitor the timely closure of corrective actions

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on compliance for site-based health and safety teams

  • Consolidate, analyze, and interpret safety performance data and incident reports

  • Develop dashboards and reports for leadership and regulatory stakeholders

  • Support investigations into serious incidents and near misses, ensuring robust root cause analysis and shared learning

  • Identify incident trends and support the design of proactive risk mitigation interventions

  • Support the development and rollout of safety training programs, awareness campaigns, and toolbox talks

  • Promote safety culture initiatives through collaboration, communication, and cross-site knowledge sharing

  • Act as a liaison between head office QSE leadership and site-based health and safety managers

  • Collaborate with QSE, HR, Engineering, and Operations teams to align safety initiatives

Key Performance Indicators

  • National Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) performance

  • Health and safety audit compliance scores

  • Timely closure rate of audit findings

  • Incident and near-miss reporting rates

  • Compliance with legal registers and permit-to-work systems

  • Coverage and effectiveness of safety training and awareness initiatives

  • Completion of risk assessments and safety documentation

  • Safety culture maturity assessment results

Qualifications

  • National Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related field

  • Professional certifications such as SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, or NOSA

  • ISO 45001 Lead or Internal Auditor certification is preferred

  • Membership with a relevant professional body is an advantage

Experience

  • 5 to 7 years’ experience in a health and safety role, including exposure to multi-site or head office functions

  • Previous experience within a manufacturing or FMCG environment is preferred

  • Proven experience in implementing corporate safety programs and driving standardization across multiple sites

  • Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced understanding of OHS legislation, ISO 45001, and corporate safety standards

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety data management systems

  • Strong analytical and reporting skills with high attention to detail

  • Effective communication, training development, and facilitation skills

  • Strong project coordination and stakeholder engagement capabilities

  • Ability to influence without direct authority and support safety culture transformation
