Sasol careers – General Worker

Purpose of Job
The General Worker will support the Maintenance Team by providing assistance with equipment maintenance, welding, fitting, electrical tasks, and ensuring the reliability of equipment. The role involves adhering to established procedures and codes to enhance the stability and sustainability of equipment. The General Worker in Directional Drilling will also assist in maintaining sustainable practices within the team, following required procedures and codes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform welding on mining equipment using the flux core method and other welding processes.
  • Operate welding equipment safely.
  • Cut material and pre-heat using oxy-fuel gas cutting equipment, adhering to safety rules.
  • Assist in the operation of overhead cranes and lifting equipment, following safe working procedures.
  • Complete job-specific tasks and checklists accurately.
  • Conduct visual inspections of the working environment to ensure safety standards are followed, reporting any unsafe conditions to supervisors.
  • Apply Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Codes of Practice (COPs) to ensure housekeeping standards are maintained.
  • Work efficiently as part of a team, aiming to meet team goals.
  • Report on task activities and participate in hazard identification and risk assessments.
  • Attend daily morning meetings to discuss work assignments.
  • Contribute to the business goals by meeting deadlines.
  • Identify any abnormal conditions and report them promptly.
  • Suggest cost-saving initiatives based on an understanding of how actions impact the team’s budget.
  • Assist artisans with daily tasks.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12/N3/NCV Level 4 or equivalent (Mathematics & Science – advantageous).
  • Driver’s license (minimum code 08).
  • Ability to obtain a medical certificate of fitness.
  • First Aid Certificate (preferred).

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • At least 12 months of welding experience.
  • Ability to safely use an angle grinder and operate a cutting torch.
  • Knowledge of underground machinery such as Shuttle Cars, Roof Bolters, Crushers, and Feeders/Feeder Breakers.
  • 12 months of plant experience (preferred).
  • Ability to use MIG welding equipment (preferred).

Key Competencies

  • Knowledge and skills related to safety procedures, safety awareness, emergency preparedness, SOPs & COPs, the Mine Health & Safety Act, OSHA, and the ability to interpret written information and work instructions.
