Purpose of the Role

As a General Manager, you will define, execute, and deliver strategic plans for colliery operations, ensuring alignment with Sasol’s broader mining strategy. Your primary focus will be on profitability, long-term sustainability, and operational excellence. You will lead, direct, and manage all aspects of colliery operations, including production, safety, compliance, stakeholder engagement, and cost management, while adhering to legislative and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement high-quality asset management strategies for sustained operations.
  • Oversee mine planning and scheduling to optimize long-term health and mitigate risks.
  • Set and manage production targets to achieve optimal productivity and cost efficiency.
  • Ensure alignment with Sasol’s risk management framework and SHE standards.

Operational Excellence

  • Lead production operations to deliver coal volumes that meet quality and cost benchmarks.
  • Drive the execution of engineering and maintenance activities for asset optimization.
  • Ensure the delivery of small capital projects that are safe, efficient, and cost-effective.
  • Monitor technical services and implement practices for efficient production to achieve cost, volume, and quality targets.

Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE)

  • Implement evidence-based SHE practices to ensure safe operations and adherence to environmental standards.
  • Focus on minimizing Sasol’s GHG footprint and achieving continuous improvement in SHE metrics.

Stakeholder and Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with unions, local communities, government bodies, and industry stakeholders to ensure compliant and sustainable operations.
  • Ensure mining rights are effectively managed according to legislative requirements, including adherence to the Mining Charter.

Financial Accountability

  • Fully accountable for the profit and loss performance of the colliery.
  • Control operating costs to ensure production volumes are delivered within budget constraints.

Talent and Leadership Development

  • Inspire and develop talent within the organization, ensuring a collaborative and innovative culture.
  • Build partnerships that enhance operational effectiveness and drive delivery excellence.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Relevant University Degree or B Tech Degree (Postgraduate Management qualification preferred).
  • Experience: Minimum of 16 years in mining operations, with significant leadership experience.
  • Professional Certification: Mine Manager Certificate of Competency or Government Certificate of Competence (Mines).
