Main Purpose of the Role
The General Manager, Sales Road (Automotive) is responsible for overseeing the management of the Automotive vertical and the Key Account Managers allocated to automotive accounts. This includes having an in-depth understanding of all functions within the automotive industry, including operations, human resources, IT, finance, and sales. The role also takes full ownership for revenue retention and growth in the automotive vertical for road services, with a focus on expanding the portfolio into other DSV business units such as Solutions and Air & Sea in the future. The General Manager will be tasked with strategically retaining and growing the existing client base while targeting new business opportunities to meet ambitious growth targets in the automotive sector.

Basic Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of end-to-end supply chain experience, with at least 3 years in managing Account Managers supporting reputable automotive brands’ supply chains, especially in outbound road distribution within South Africa.

  • Experience in responding to tenders, RFI’s, RFP’s, and RFQ’s, formulating logistical solutions for automotive brands.

  • National Diploma or equivalent qualification.

  • Note: Experience in car or truck sales or vehicle/fleet leasing is not relevant for this position; it requires automotive logistics (road freight) experience.

Added Advantages

  • Experience in end-to-end supply chain management within the automotive sector, including inbound logistics via Air & Sea and warehousing services.

  • Experience working for an auto OEM in a supply chain or logistics capacity.

Duties and Responsibilities
Commercial

  • Ensure DSV Auto Sales team aligns with company and customer strategies to achieve long-term relationships and profitable business.

  • Build and maintain relationships within portfolio accounts (C-level) as well as with Regional Management and Directors.

  • Create a positive team environment and manage Account Managers according to Minimal Acceptable Standards (MAS) for effective business implementation.

  • Monitor revenue through billing variance reports to identify loss or leakage. Achieve new business and retention targets.

  • Set annual budgets for customers, considering factors such as annual increases, up/down trade, trading days, and customer seasonality.

  • Manage teams to maintain a Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) of less than 35 days and ensure no outstanding debt older than 120 days.

Team Management

  • Set annual goals for all subordinates and follow up quarterly.

  • Conduct performance reviews on a quarterly and annual basis.

  • Manage soft skills such as conflict resolution and team motivation.

  • Plan resources to ensure sufficient capacity.

Governance, Compliance, and Reporting

  • Oversee contract negotiations, ensuring liabilities, insurance, and NDAs are addressed appropriately.

  • Ensure accurate and signed contracts for all customers and maintain a register of annual increases.

  • Provide monthly and annual reporting of new business and retention achievements.

Relationship Management

  • Lead customer engagements through on-site or virtual meetings, operational meetings, monthly business reviews, and quarterly strategic sessions.

  • Handle customer escalations promptly, offering feasible solutions to prevent recurrence.

  • Build strong internal relationships with other departments and business units to promote an efficient work environment.

Solution Design

  • Provide expert technical guidance to sales staff in designing new customer solutions, staying within business unit parameters.

  • Continuously assist in developing new processes to ensure profitable business practices.

  • Oversee the implementation of new accounts or services.
