Transnet Vacancies – External Communication Specialist

Transnet is seeking an experienced External Communication Specialist to join our team. The role focuses on promoting Transnet’s reputation and enhancing its image among external stakeholders. As an External Communication Specialist, you will conceptualize, plan, and execute our external communications activities while building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in both traditional and online media.

Key Responsibilities

  • External Communication Strategy
    • Implement the annual external communication plan to meet organizational objectives.
    • Collaborate with senior management to create and execute communication strategies tailored to our target audiences.
  • Media Relations
    • Build and maintain relationships with key media contacts across various platforms.
    • Liaise with journalists and public relations agencies to manage the flow of information between Transnet and the media.
    • Develop content for press releases, factsheets, thought leadership articles, and other communication materials for print, radio, and online publications.
    • Monitor and promptly respond to media inquiries, ensuring accurate and timely communication.
    • Manage crisis communication as needed and escalate to senior management when required.
  • Monitoring and Reporting
    • Track media coverage and compile daily and weekly reports.
    • Maintain a media database and monitor the organization’s online presence.
    • Collaborate with the production and multimedia teams to disseminate content effectively.
  • Project Management
    • Project manage media and communication campaigns from conception to completion.
    • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure timely execution of communication activities.
  • Compliance and Governance
    • Ensure all communication activities adhere to Transnet’s requirements, the POPI Act, Access to Information Act, and other relevant legislation.
    • Maintain ethical business practices in alignment with corporate governance standards.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Corporate Communication, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a communications role.
  • Familiarity with media monitoring tools and public relations best practices.
  • Valid driver’s license (code 08).
  • Ability to travel as required and approved.
