Job Overview:
Dis-Chem Pharmacies’ Langenhoven store is seeking a Dispensary Support team member. This role is designed for learners who are committed to completing the learner basic pharmacist assistant course. This training will provide a thorough understanding of key areas in the pharmaceutical environment and dispensing, emphasizing high-quality, on-the-job learning. Initially, you will be employed in a fixed-term Dispensary Support position. Permanent employment will be considered upon successful registration with the SAPC as a basic pharmacist assistant.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete a proficiency test to qualify for registration with the Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a learner basic assistant.
  • Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances.
  • Help with the compounding, manipulation, or preparation of non-sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to formulas and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) approved by the responsible pharmacist.
  • Support with unpacking, merchandising, and maintaining the cleanliness of dispensary and OTC shelves as directed by the responsible pharmacist.
  • Perform additional tasks assigned by the Dispensary Manager.
  • Learn to accurately interpret prescriptions and adhere to legal requirements as set by the South African Pharmacy Council.
  • Ensure precise picking, packing, labeling, and checking of medications, and be knowledgeable about common dosages and significant drug interactions.
  • Confirm all medications are checked and signed for accuracy by a pharmacist.
  • Assist in stock control, including managing cleanliness, organizing shelves, and monitoring expiry dates of Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines or scheduled substances.
  • Follow up with patients on script tracking reports and appointments as requested by the Dispensary Manager.
  • Assist with call center scripts and patient service telephone inquiries.
  • Provide health information to individuals to promote wellness.
  • Aid in the authorization of chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication schemes.
  • Report low or out-of-stock levels and stock discrepancies to the Dispensary Manager.
  • Receive dispensary stock according to company SOPs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Essential:
    • Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate with at least 50% in Pure Mathematics, Life Science, or Physical Science and an overall average of 50%.

Competencies:

  • Proficiency in English and a second language—ability to read, write, and speak.
  • Strong time management skills, ability to meet deadlines, handle pressure, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, including listening, customer service, problem-solving, and conflict management.
  • Team player with professional conduct, accountability, and trustworthiness.
  • Competent in computer and numerical skills.

Advantageous:

  • Experience in retail FMCG or Dis-Chem front shop with a strong performance record.
  • Knowledge of drug and family planning, as well as complementary medicine.
  • Familiarity with Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting systems.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must pass a proficiency test to qualify for registration with the Pharmacy Council.
  • South African citizenship.
  • Clear criminal and credit record (MIE).
