Transnet Vacancies – Cost Controller

We are seeking a skilled Cost Controller to oversee the financial management of projects through effective cost control methods and techniques. This role involves providing integrated project services, monitoring project expenditures, and ensuring compliance with organizational standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cost control, excellent analytical skills, and experience in a multidiscipline project environment.

Key Responsibilities

As a Cost Controller, you will be responsible for:

  1. Cost Estimation and Analysis: Provide expert costing and estimating services for projects, utilizing software approved by Transnet. Analyze spending trends, estimate final costs, and report any deviations from baseline budgets.
  2. Client Interaction: Regularly engage with clients to ensure professional service delivery and address any concerns related to project costs.
  3. Tool and System Adherence: Ensure compliance with Transnet systems, tools, and procedures, including Project Execution Plans (PEPs).
  4. Resource Allocation: Ensure resource allocations are up-to-date, and that project hours are adequately distributed to cover tasks.
  5. Cost Reporting and Change Management: Prepare and present detailed monthly status reports, and resolve any discrepancies between project cost reports and financial records. Implement and adhere to change management processes to manage project changes effectively.
  6. Project Cost Control: Coordinate monthly cost flows, issue reports of all expenditures, and communicate cost status to project teams. Perform variance analysis to ensure alignment with baseline budgets and cost plans.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates for this role should have:

  • A minimum three-year tertiary qualification or relevant National Diploma in Finance, Quantity Surveying, or Construction.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Cost Control/Cost Engineering within a multidiscipline and infrastructure project environment.
  • Professional registration is not compulsory but will be an advantage.
  • A valid driver’s license (Code 08).

Competencies and Skills

To excel in this position, you should have:

  • Knowledge: Sound technical knowledge of civil, building, and construction projects, including EPCM principles. Understanding of budgeting, cost control, cost forecasting, and risk management concepts.
  • Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, effective problem-solving abilities, prompt decision-making, and conflict resolution. Computer literacy (MS Office, SAP, Primavera P6), resource management, and time management are essential. Additional skills in budgeting, verbal and written communications, presentation, networking, and business acumen are required.
  • Technical Competencies: Proficiency in risk management, change control, cost control and monitoring, estimating, and reporting.
