Armscor Vacancies – Corrosion Engineer

Armscor Dockyard is looking for a skilled Corrosion Engineer to join our Engineering Services Division. This role offers the opportunity to provide expert corrosion prevention, control, and protective coating consulting services to the SA Navy and Armscor Dockyard. Key Responsibilities:

  • Corrosion Control Consulting: Offer expert advice on coating technologies and new developments in corrosion control to the SA Navy and Armscor stakeholders.
  • Cathodic Protection: Design, install, operate, and maintain cathodic protection facilities, anodes, and corrosion control systems.
  • Specification Management: Develop and interpret painting and preparation specifications for various surfaces.
  • Field Trials & Testing: Conduct field trials and accelerated corrosion testing using corrosion salt spray chambers.
  • Coating Consultation: Provide guidance on coating selection based on performance and life expectancy, with a focus on preparation, application, and quality control.
  • Technical Advisory: Offer comprehensive consultancy services on corrosion control for a range of maritime structures, systems, and materials.
  • System Monitoring & Maintenance: Monitor and maintain cathodic protection systems, including corrective actions for ships and submarines.
  • Coating Failure Analysis: Investigate coating failures in field and laboratory settings to develop both current and long-term solutions.

Qualifications:

  • BSc in Chemical Engineering, BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, or BSc (Hons) in Materials Science
  • M. Tech in Science & Engineering is an advantage
  • Registration with ECSA or eligibility for registration as an Engineering Technician is preferred

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience in Corrosion Control and Prevention
  • Experience in corrosion failure investigation, field and lab testing is beneficial

Special Requirements:

  • Proficiency in microbiological corrosion solutions
  • Knowledge of metallic coating systems (e.g., HDG, electroplating, anodising)
  • Familiarity with environmental control for corrosion prevention
  • Specialized knowledge of marine corrosion environments

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication abilities for an integrated project environment
  • Able to work independently and manage multiple tasks under pressure
  • Prioritization of safety and environmental considerations
  • Technical proposal preparation, specification interpretation, and report writing
  • Knowledge in coating inspection, cathodic protection, structural understanding, and legal compliance
