Purpose of the Job:
The Chief Technologist: Software Systems will play a pivotal role in IMT projects by conducting engineering software designs, creating software applications, and integrating these solutions with hardware systems. This role is crucial for advancing maritime domain awareness capabilities.
Critical Performance Areas:
- Software Development: Design and develop computer models for simulation and interpret results for mathematical verification.
- Technical Solutions: Develop solutions to complex software design tasks and contribute expertise to the development, integration, and application of naval systems.
- Project Management: Manage and execute technically challenging projects, leading a team of specialists and support personnel.
- Technology Implementation: Decide on applied technology within projects, influencing medium-term readiness.
- Client Solutions: Translate client requirements into practical, cost-effective technical solutions.
- Technical Reporting: Prepare and document technical reports detailing raw data, interpretation, and recommendations.
- System Testing: Conduct system tests (hardware integrated with software) and document results.
- Decision Making: Make complex technology decisions and provide inputs for IMT’s long-term capability development plan.
- Client Interaction: Maintain client interfaces to promote technical expertise and identify new business opportunities.
- Industry Networking: Stay updated on the latest technology by networking with industry and academia.
- Process Improvement: Identify opportunities for IMT process improvement.
- Professional Development: Engage in professional development to maintain and extend expertise, and mentor less experienced team members.
- Representation: Represent IMT at conferences, seminars, exhibitions, and workshops.
Qualifications:
- M-Tech Engineering (Electronics or Mechatronics)
- ECSA registration (advantageous)
Technical/Legal Certificate/Professional Registration:
- ECSA registration as a Professional Technologist (IPET/ECSA etc.) recommended
Experience:
- 12-15 years of experience in software programming and development (e.g., C++, C#, Python, Java)
- Experience in interfacing equipment at signal and software levels (including radar and sensor integration/networking)
Skills & Knowledge:
- Advanced knowledge of modeling, simulation, and solution procedures
- Proficiency in software programming (e.g., C++, C#, Python, Java)
- Knowledge of software development tools, modeling, and simulation applications
- Experience in hardware and software integration
- Familiarity with signal interface standards (e.g., RS422, NMEA, Asterix)
- Understanding of internet protocols and networking standards (e.g., TCP/IP, UDP, VPNs)
- Knowledge of AIS, LRIT, IFF, ADSB, and WECDIS (advantageous)
- Knowledge of IMT Project Management and systems principles
- Expertise in engineering processes and acquisition management practices
- Ability to translate client requirements into practical technical solutions
- Expert knowledge of the techno-maritime area
- Understanding of relevant Armscor & IMT policies, practices, and procedures
- Awareness of Safety, Health, and Environmental legislation and standards
