Purpose of the Job
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on commercial vehicles in line with Value Logistics job cards and manufacturer specifications. The role ensures vehicles are roadworthy, reliable, and maintained to high operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Vehicle Maintenance and Repairs
- Conduct visual inspections and onboard diagnostics during pre-diagnosis
- Review workshop job cards for accuracy and understanding
- Adhere to flat rates for repairs
- Attend to breakdowns during office hours and after hours
- Perform all maintenance services according to manufacturer specifications and maintenance schedules
- Execute visual inspections, calibration work, and necessary adjustments
- Identify deviations, irregularities, and unusual wear, initiating parts orders and feedback to the Workshop Foreman
- Reset maintenance systems following internal procedures
- Inspect, dismantle, and replace parts with new or reconditioned components
- Document all work carried out and return old/unusable parts appropriately
Quality Assurance and Testing
- Compare vehicle condition with standard production configurations to assess technical status
- Perform final checks using testing and measuring equipment to ensure full repair completion and roadworthiness
Operational Support and Conduct
- Assist with operational tasks as required
- Maintain professional conduct and adherence to company dress code standards
- Ensure daily housekeeping standards are upheld in the workshop
- Follow all Health and Safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Trade-tested Commercial Vehicle Diesel Technician
Skills Required
- Ability to apply appropriate techniques and strategies to maintain a positive work environment
- Basic inference skills from customer usage patterns
- Understanding of business principles relevant to the workshop
- Ability to interact with customers regarding own work area
- Competence in identifying hazards and following safety instructions
- Knowledge of basic Health and Safety procedures under direct supervision
